The Inuit Sled Dog has played a vital role in the history of Nunavut and enabled the Inuit and their ancestors to survive in one of the harshest and most unforgiving climates on Earth. In recognition of this, the Inuit Sled Dog was selected as the mammalian symbol of Nunavut.

This breed has evolved into a magnificent animal, not a fine-tuned racing machine like southern husky breeds, but an incredibly tenacious dog with outstanding endurance and the ability to work hard for extended periods of time, despite frigid temperatures, appalling weather conditions and limited food. During more than four thousand years, this dog has not changed in appearance, function or temperament.
